DTN News - AFGHANISTAN WAR NEWS: Hundreds Of Taliban In Tunnel Jail Escape

Asian Defense News: DTN News - AFGHANISTAN WAR NEWS: Hundreds Of Taliban In Tunnel Jail Escape
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 25, 2011: Military commanders among more than 500 Taliban fighters broken out of prison via a 320-metre long tunnel.

Some 540 members of the Taliban including military commanders have escaped from Kandahar prison via a 320 metre-long tunnel, Afghan government officials have confirmed to Al Jazeera.

A Taliban official on Monday also confirmed the overnight escape, boasting that the prison break had been "very well-planned" and that it was five months in the making, Al Jazeera's Qais Azimy, reporting from Kabul, said.

According to a Taliban statement, the tunnel was not dug by the inmates but by fighters outside the prison.

"Mujahideen started digging a 320 metre-long to the prison from the south side, which was completed after a five-month period, bypassing check posts and the Kandahar-Herat main highway, leading directly to the political prison," the statement read.

"The tunnel reached its target last night, from where the prisoner Mujahideen were led away through the escape route by three previously informed inmates in a period of four-and-a-half hours, starting from 11pm last night and ending at 3:30am this morning. Mujahideen later on sent vehicles to the inmates who were led away to secure destinations."

"They all have made it safe to our centres and there was no fighting," Yousuf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, said.

Ahmadi said that 106 were Taliban commanders while the rest were foot soldiers. Kandahar police said they had re-captured eight commanders so far.

The Taliban said prison guards did not notice the escape until four hours after the operation was completed.

The prison in southern Afghanistan typically holds drug dealers as well as Taliban fighters captured by NATO forces, our correspondent said.

The break constitutes a "big success" for the Taliban and would "have a dramatic effect on the fight against the Taliban in the region," said Azimy.

Previous escapes

There have been previous escapes from this prison. In June 2008, Taliban fighters attacked the facility, blasting through its entrance and engaging in a gun battle with police.

Nearly all of the estimated 1,150 prisoners, including some 400 Taliban, escaped, according to Afghan officials.

A Taliban spokesperson said that two suicide bombers blew themselves up near the entrance of the gate to the prison before 30 Taliban fighters attacked and killed 16 policemen.

Kandahar prison was also the scene of a mass hunger strike by hundreds of inmates in May 2008 during which 47 inmates sewed their lips shut after complaining they had been tortured and denied fair trials.

Kandahar city and the surrounding province, considered the birthplace of the Taliban movement, has been the scene of some of the worst fighting in Afghanistan.

DTN News - PAKISTAN NEWS: Pakistanis Rally Against Drone Strikes

Asian Defense News: DTN News - PAKISTAN NEWS: Pakistanis Rally Against Drone Strikes
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 25, 2011: Angry with a US drone strike which killed at least 25, Pakistani activists block a key NATO supply route to Afghanistan.

More than 250 drone strikes have killed at least 1,500 people in north and south Waziristan since August 2008 [AFP]

The main supply route for NATO troops in Afghanistan was temporarily closed after thousands of people blocked a key highway in Pakistan to protest against US drone strikes.

The call for Sunday's blockade of the supply line came from cricketer-turn-politician Imran Khan after US officials rejected Pakistan's demand for sharp cuts in drone strikes in its tribal regions where al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters are based.

Activists from Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI), Khan's party, and other parties staged a sit-in on the highway leading to Afghanistan through the Pashtun tribal region of Khyber.

A US drone attack that left at least 25 people dead in Pakistan's North Waziristan region triggered the two-day sit-in near the city of Peshawar.

Friday's attack by the unmanned drone hit a compound in Hasan Khel and was the latest in a series of such attacks to have targeted the region.

According to the Pakistani media, the border region has been targeted by at least 20 US drone attacks this year.

NATO resolute

According to US officials, the routes through Pakistan bring in 40 per cent of supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Of the remainder, 40 per cent comes through Afghanistan's neighbours in the north and 20 per cent by air.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul said the two-day blockade would have no impact on the alliance's operations in Afghanistan.

"Co-ordination with Pakistani government officials has been conducted and we understand the government will maintain security," an ISAF spokesman said. "There is no impact on ISAF sustainment."

The increasing use of drones has been mired in controversy, with remotely-controlled Predator and Reaper drones being blamed for inadvertent strikes on civilians, inflaming anti-US sentiment.
