(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 15, 2012: North Korea has unveiled what appears to be a new missile at a military parade in Pyongyang following the first public speech by the country's recently anointed new leader, Kim Jong-un.
The missile was shown on Sunday during celebrations for the centennial of the birth of the late North Korean foundeinternational worries heightened by the country's simultaneous development of nuclear weapons. Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-un's grandfather. It is a possible addition to an arsenal that has raised
Kim Jong-un, who took over as supreme leader after the death in December of his father, Kim Jong-il, spoke publicly for the first time Sunday, just two days after a failed rocket launch. He praised his father's "military first" policy.
Kim, who had been seen but not publicly heard before Sunday, stepped to the podium to speak before tens of thousands of people gathered in Pyongyang's main square for meticulously choreographed festivities meant to glorify his grandfather.
Kim said the era when nuclear arms could be used to threaten his country was "forever over." He called for strengthening the country's "military first" policy by placing the "first, second and third" priorities on military might.
He said his country had built a "mighty military" capable of both offence and defence in any type of modern warfare.
"Superiority in military technology is no longer monopolized by imperialists," he said. Soldiers are more important than rockets and artillery, Kim said, and military officers should treat their troops "like brothers and sisters."

Co-operation pledge

He said he is "heartbroken" that the rival Koreas have been divided for decades, and said North Korea "will co-operate with anyone" who truly wishes for reunification.
North Korea defied the U.S. and others Friday by firing a long-range rocket that space officials said was mounted with an observational satellite despite warnings against pushing ahead with the provocative launch. Washington and others say it was a covert test of long-range missile technology.
Hours after the rocket splintered into pieces over the Yellow Sea, the country made an unusual admission of failure, but Kim did not mention the launch in his remarks Sunday.
Kim has since underlined the country's "military first" policy with a budget that allocates a sizable chunk of funding to defence spending.
International condemnation of the rocket firing was swift, including the suspension of U.S. food aid, and there are worries that the North's next move could be an even more provocative nuclear test.
The United Nations Security Council denounced the launch as a violation of resolutions that prohibit North Korea from developing its nuclear and missile programs. The council imposed sanctions on North Korea after its first nuclear test in 2006 and stepped up sanctions after its second in 2009.

DTN News - KOREAN PENINSULA ON HIGH TENSIONS: North Korea Set To Install Satellite On Rocket

Asian Defense News: DTN News - KOREAN PENINSULA ON HIGH TENSIONS: North Korea Set To Install Satellite On Rocket
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources AFP
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 10, 2012: North Korea is set to complete the assembly of its latest rocket by installing the satellite payload later Tuesday, a senior space official said.
"We are expecting to complete assembly by today," Ryu Kum-Chol, deputy director of the space development department at the communist state's Committee for Space Technology, told foreign journalists in Pyongyang.

Ryu also insisted that debris from the launch, which is scheduled between April 12 and 16 to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of North Korea's founding leader, posed no danger to countries in the region.

"We've chosen a safe trajectory. The first stage will fall 100 miles (160 kilometres) from land (in the Philippines), and the second stage 120 miles from land," he said.

But in case of any problem with the trajectory, the official said that the rocket was "capable of self-destruction" from ground control.

Impoverished but nuclear-armed North Korea says the rocket will propel the 100-kilogram (220-pound) Kwangmyongsong-3 (Shining Star) satellite into orbit to collect data on forests and natural resources within its territory.

However, the United States and other nations say the rocket launch is a pretext for a ballistic missile test, in defiance of United Nations resolutions and a US-North Korean deal concluded just in February.

Russia joined the international condemnation on Tuesday, saying the rocket launch showed disregard for UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea's nuclear and weapons programmes.

DTN News - KOREAN PENINSULA NEWS: China Troubled By North Korean Rocket Launch Plans

Asian Defense News: DTN News - KOREAN PENINSULA NEWS: China Troubled By North Korean Rocket Launch Plans
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 8, 2012: China's foreign minister said Sunday that Beijing is troubled by North Korea's plan to launch a long-range rocket and has urged more diplomacy to handle the situation, a measured response to a provocation that has unsettled the region.
Yang Jiechi said he discussed North Korea's launch plan during trilateral talks with his counterparts from Seoul and Tokyo in the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo.

The foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea both said that a launch by North Korea would violate UN Security Council resolutions -- indicating their belief that the North should face sanctions if it goes through with the plan.

But China, the North's closest ally, didn't echo that view and instead urged further dialogue and communication.

"The Chinese side is troubled by the developments, and strongly encourages everyone involved on all sides, at high and low levels, to remain calm and reasonable," Yang told reporters. "These issues need to be worked out in a diplomatic and peaceful manner."
North Korea says the rocket will carry a satellite into orbit to study crops and natural resources. Washington and others call the launch a cover to test missile systems that could target parts of the United States.

There have been fears in Japan and South Korea that debris could fall from the rocket, expected to be launched in the coming week. Japan's defence minister has ordered missile units to intercept the rocket if it or its fragments threaten to hit Japan. Seoul has also warned it might shoot down any parts of the rocket heading for its territory.

Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said the key result of the talks was a plan to continue to work together to stop the launch.

However, Japan's Kyodo News service quoted Gemba as saying that the three sides failed to reach consensus on the launch, an apparent reference to China's softer approach.

"We were able to increase our common views," Kyodo quoted Gemba as saying. "But frankly speaking, I would not say the three countries completely shared the same view."

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Saturday that South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan told Yang during bilateral talks that Beijing should play a larger role in mediating international concerns over the launch.

The North Korean launch is meant as a showcase of national power and technology during celebrations of the centennial of the April 15 birth of national founder Kim Il Sung. While North Korea has conducted tests of two nuclear devices, analysts don't believe it has yet mastered the technology needed to shrink a nuclear weapon and mount it on a missile.

North Korea has conducted three such launches since 1998. The last launch, in 2009, led to UN condemnation. The North then walked away from six-nation nuclear disarmament talks, and weeks later carried out its second nuclear test.
