(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - December 5, 2012: Iran has obtained data from a U.S. intelligence drone that shows it was spying on the country's military sites and oil terminals, Iranian media reported its armed forces as saying on Wednesday.

Iran announced on Tuesday that it had captured a ScanEagle drone belonging to the United States, but Washington said there was no evidence to support the assertion.

The incident has underscored tensions in the Gulf as Iran and the United States draw attention to their military capabilities in the vital oil exporting region in a standoff over Iran's disputed nuclear program.

"We have fully extracted the drone's information," Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement on Wednesday, according to Iran's English-language Press TV.

The drone was gathering military information and spying on the transfer of oil from Iran's petroleum terminals, the IRGC statement said, according to Press TV. Iran's main export terminal is at Kharg Island.

The U.S. government has focused on blocking Iran's oil exports through sanctions to persuade Iran to give up its disputed nuclear program, which the U.S. and its allies believe is aimed at developing a bomb, something Iran denies.

Israeli officials have threatened to strike Iran's nuclear sites if sanctions and diplomacy fail to stop its program.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz - through which about 40 percent of the world's seaborne crude oil is shipped - if it comes under attack. U.S. commanders have said they will not let that happen.

The compact ScanEagle drone had been flying over the Gulf in the last few days and was captured when it strayed into Iranian airspace, the IRGC said in a statement on Tuesday.

The U.S. military has been using Boeing Co ScanEagle spy planes since 2004 and they have become a relatively inexpensive way for the United States and others to conduct surveillance.

In November, the United States said Iranian warplanes shot at a U.S. surveillance drone flying in international airspace.

Iran said the aircraft had entered its airspace to spy on

Iranian oil platforms and said it would respond "decisively" to any incursions.

In December 2011, Iran said it had captured a U.S. RQ-170 reconnaissance drone in eastern Iran which was reported lost by U.S. forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

Iranian commanders have since announced they have extracted valuable technology from the aircraft and were in the process of reverse-engineering it for their own defense industry.

DTN News - IRAN DEFENSE NEWS: Iran Rolls Out Advanced Drone, Missiles To ‘Confront American Threat'

Asian Defense News: DTN News - IRAN DEFENSE NEWS: Iran Rolls Out Advanced Drone, Missiles To ‘Confront American Threat'

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - September 26, 2012: Tehran has reportedly unveiled an advanced drone and tested an anti-aircraft missile system as the Islamic Republic proves it has the military might to fend off any threat amidst, including advanced US fighters.
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) showcased its new unmanned aerial vehicle, the Shahed 129, on Monday.
Tehran claims the domestically produced unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is capable of carrying out combat and reconnaissance missions with its 24-hour nonstop flight capability, state-owned Press TV reports.
They also say the drone can hit targets at up to 2,000 kilometers away and can be equipped with electronic and communication systems which can transmit live feeds. The military says the Shaded 129 drone will aid Iran’s surveillance capabilities in border areas, the Persian Gulf, and the Sea of Oman.
The IRGC also successfully test-fired the country’s latest anti-aircraft missile system.
The Ra'ad mid-range missile system is equipped with Taer 2 missiles and can reportedly intercept targets at a range of 50 kilometers and fly at an altitude of almost 23 kilometers.
Tehran claims the domestically manufactured missiles are "more advanced" than the Russian-made Buk family of missiles, Fars news agency reports.
Fars also reports that at Sunday’s naval drill, four missiles hit a warship-sized target, sinking it in 50 seconds.
"We have missile systems that cover all the Persian Gulf coasts and the American bases (in the region)," Admiral Ali Fadavi, commander of the Guards' navy, told Fars.

The admiral also added that within half a year "big naval maneuvers in the Strait of Hormuz," will take place.
"This system has been built with the aim of confronting American warplanes," Iranian Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' aerospace division, declared late last week.
Analysts regularly challenge some of Iran's military assertions, however, saying the Islamic republic tends to exaggerate its military capabilities.
The demonstration coincided with US-led naval exercises in the gulf amid rising anxiety over Iran’s refusal to abandon its controversial nuclear program, which the country says is for peaceful means only.
Israel, which perceives the program as Tehran’s drive to obtain intercontinental ballistic missiles, has continually threatened a pre-emptive strike.
Washington has opposed unilateral Israeli action, fearing it will trigger a regional conflict. The US has beefed up its naval and air personnel in the region, however.
The move is seen as threatening by the Islamic Republic. “Iran will not start any war but it could launch a preemptive attack if it was sure that the enemies are putting the final touches to attack it,” Hajizadeh has warned adversaries.
Hajizadeh also declared that an Israel-Iran war would be disastrous "and will turn into World War III as other countries become embroiled in the conflict

DTN News - IRAN DEFENSE NEWS: Iran Says World War III May Erupt If Attacked By Israel

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - September 24, 2012: Iran says on Sunday that the World War III may erupt if the Islamic republic is attacked by Israel.

Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Aerospace Division of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) , warned on Sunday that an Israeli strike on Iran could trigger the World War III, Press TV reported.
Israel, threatening to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities these days, has always been highly concerned over Iran's nuclear program, which is believed by the West to head for acquiring nuclear weapons under the cover of civilian purposes.
Iran has insisted that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes, and warned that it will retaliate if it comes under attack.
Hajizadeh said in case of the eruption of such a war against Iran, the situation would be out of control, according to Press TV.
"This war is likely to degenerate into the World War III," Hajizadeh said, adding that it means some countries might enter the war in favor of or against Iran.
"We see the United States and the Zionist regime (of Israel) alongside one another and we can by no means imagine that the Zionist regime would initiate a war (against Iran) without the U.S. support," he was quoted as saying.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the U.S. bases in the region as part of American soil and will definitely target them if a war breaks out," he added.
On Saturday, Iran's Commander of the IRGC, Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said that a war on Iran "will eventually happen," Press TV reported.
"War will happen but it is not clear where and when," Jafari said, adding that Iran is ready to confront any possible strike against the country.
The Israeli officials currently consider war as the only way to confront Iran, he claimed, insisting that if they begin a war, it will spell their destruction and will be the end of their adventure.
The Iranian commander said that the armed forces of the Islamic republic enjoy capabilities and equipment in hardware and software fields, according to the report.
Also, Hossein Salami, another IRGC commander, reiterated the remarks by Jafari on Sunday that "Iran will obliterate the Zionist regime if the latter takes any action against Iran," the official IRNA news agency reported.
Salami said Iran does not initiate war against any country but in case it is attacked by any country it will never stop its counterattack till the annihilation of the enemy.
Also on Sunday, Press TV reported that Iran's Air Force plans to hold a massive military maneuver in the southern parts of the country by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 2013).
"Maneuvers to be carried out by Iran are peaceful and indicate that Iran and regional countries are capable of safeguarding their security," Deputy Commander of Iran's Air Force, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, was quoted as saying.
Nasirzadeh said that the presence of non-regional powers in the Persian Gulf is "illegitimate" and emphasized that there is no necessity for such a presence.
Non-regional powers cannot provide regional states with security, he said, adding that the countries in the region can ensure their security if they cooperate with each other.
According to IRNA, IRGC will also hold a 15,000-man maneuver in Shahr-e-Rey district of Tehran city for two days from September 27- 28.
IRGC Commander in charge of the operations, General Nasiri told IRNA that the exercises aim to raise combat readiness of the ground forces.
Nasiri said that the troops will conduct shooting, night war, relief and rescue operations, said the report.

DTN News - IRAN DEFENSE NEWS: Iran Will Strongly Counter Intrusive Powers In Region: Lawmaker

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 4, 2012:  A senior Iranian lawmaker says Iran has a policy to maintain security in the Persian Gulf and strongly counter any military intrusion in the region.

“The policy of the Islamic Republic is based on maintaining security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz for all ships and oil tankers,” Chairman of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi told reporters on Tuesday.

He added that Iran has the power to counter all elements behind regional insecurity.

The senior legislator pointed to the ongoing missile drill by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in central Iran and stated that the military maneuvers display the country’s missile capability.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has entered a new phase of military might,” Boroujerdi pointed out, adding that such measures are not tantamount to any threats to the region and only denote that the Islamic Republic has the required capabilities to counter aggressions.

The three-day IRGC missile drill, entitled the Great Prophet 7, started in the central Iranian province of Semnan on Monday.

The indigenous missiles, including Shahab (Meteor) 1, 2, 3, Khalij Fars (Persian Gulf), Tondar (Lightning), Fateh (Victor) and Zelzal (Quake) as well as Qiam (Uprising) were fired at mock targets during the drill.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems.

Iran has repeatedly assured other nations, especially regional neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is merely based on deterrence.

*Iran drill conveys message of sovereignty to world: Foreign Ministry Spokesman

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast says the ongoing Great Prophet 7 missile drill in the central sector of the country is intended to convey a message of sovereignty and full preparedness to establish security in the Persian Gulf as well as the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking at a weekly press conference in Tehran on Tuesday, Mehmanparast said the drill aims to display Iran's might and attentiveness to establish safety in the Persian Gulf and secure the passage of oil cargos through Hormuz Strait.

The senior Iranian official added that the Islamic Republic attaches great significance to the security of the Persian Gulf, stressing that Iran has both the capability and power to ensure the security and safe movement of energy supplies in the region.

Deputy Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Hossein Salami said earlier on Tuesday that the Great Prophet 7 missile drill serves as a “firm response” to the threats of a military option against the Islamic Republic.

“The main aim of this drill is to demonstrate the Iranian nation’s political resolve to defend [its] vital values and national interests,” he stated.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - May 1, 2012: Iran's Defence Minister, Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi, has warned that the basing of the US F-22 Raptor strike aircraft in the United Arab Emirates is "detrimental to regional security."

According to the FARS news agency Vahidi said today that "The deployment of F-22 fighters in a base in the UAE is a harmful move and undermines the security of the region.
"We consider such (military) presence in the region as to be useless and harmful and more aimed at creating a psychological ploy and an insecure atmosphere in the region. We don't see it useful" Vahidi told Al Alam TV network, according to FARS.

Vahidi said that guaranteeing security in region is possible only through cooperation among all the regional states.

The comments by the Iranian minister came after media reports revealed that the US has recently deployed its F-22 Raptors at the UAE Al Dafra Air Base.
In a comment, FARS said that Iranian officials have always cautioned about the devastating consequences of tension in the region, and called on certain regional states to be "watchful of the plots of some aliens who seek to stir tension in this sensitive region."

It said: "Tehran believes that deployment of trans-regional powers in the region impairs security and is a source of tension in the region, reiterating that regional peace and security will be established if all the regional countries grow united and stage all-out cooperation."

Additional info from AFP;

The United States has deployed sophisticated F-22 fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates amid deepening tensions between Iran and its pro-US neighbors, officials said Monday.

The US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, would not say how many F-22s would be sent to the Al-Dhafra air base in the United Arab Emirates. Military officers tend to avoid publicly discussing details of operations at the US air base.

An Air Force spokeswoman confirmed that a number of F-22 Raptors, the most advanced fighter in the US fleet, would be deployed to the region without mentioning the base or Iran.

"The United States Air Force has deployed F-22s to Southwest Asia. Such deployments strengthen military-to-military relationships, promote sovereign and regional security, improve combined tactical air operations, and enhance interoperability of forces, equipment and procedures," said Major Mary Danner-Jones.

Pentagon spokesman Captain John Kirby told reporters the move "was a very normal deployment" in keeping with an adjustment of US forces in the region following the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

Territorial disputes between Iran and the United Arab Emirates over three islands in the Gulf have flared recently, with Washington voicing support for Abu Dhabi's stance.

The argument over the Gulf islands comes against the backdrop of tensions surrounding Iran's nuclear program, with the US, European and Israeli governments fearing Tehran is pursuing a clandestine nuclear weapons project.

Iran's atomic ambitions and growing missile arsenal have raised concerns in Gulf Arab states, which have negotiated arms deals with Washington to build up missile defenses as a counter to Iran.

In December, the United States announced a $3.48 billion arms sale with the United Arab Emirates for missile defense batteries and radars.
