(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - January 1, 2011: It is the first day of the New Year! This day of celebration dates back over 4,000 years to ancient Babylon, though on their calender it was celebrated in correlation with the first day of spring.

The Roman Senate changed the date for New Year's Day in 153 BC to January 1 for military reasons. Today, New Year's Day signifies a year of new beginnings and resolutions.

There are various traditions and festivals that take place on New Year's Day around the world. In California, people decorate carriages with flowers during the Tournament of Roses Parade in order to celebrate the ripening of their orange crops.

In the Netherlands, people eat donuts because they believe it will bring them good fortune. Another popular tradition found around the world is the making of New Year's resolutions. What's your New Year's resolution this year?

Happy New Year!
